Day Six ÔøΩ The Lizard Strikes Back

Today was the most expensive day so far, burned through over 100 euro in minutes by journeying over to Capri. The boat over was a twin hulled thing which took about 20 minutes from Sorrento, the sea was smooth and the weather sunny. Although when we got there we had no plan or clue what was on the island so we stood about looking helpless, hoping to attract some useful soul; this turned out to be a couple from Vancouver Canada.

So after catching the funicular* and heading into Capri town ÔøΩ as instructed by Canadians - we went exploring. Capri is supposed to be the playground of the rich and famous, I can assure you that if I was rich and famous IÔøΩd find somewhere better as my playground, thereÔøΩs Vancouver for a start.

The town is balanced high on the cliffs over the sea, it has very small paths between all the designer shops and thatÔøΩs about all you need to know. Capri is pretty pointless, itÔøΩs not overly interesting, or beautiful; the only thing that sticks in my memory is a small ugly pair of sandals I saw in a shop window. They were 400 euro. The shirt next to it was 800 euro; I despair.

Ah, and the journey back. That was fun as it was on a hydrofoil, the weather had clouded over, the first time on the holiday, and the sea was choppy. The hydrofoil bounced and lurched back to Sorrento, the baby doing free floating flip-flops in Emma. That was fun. Boats, and the concept of sinking in general, donÔøΩt worry me and I donÔøΩt get sea sick at all. Planes on the other hand are a stupid invention.

We finally solved the lizard question. How could we hear it in our room but not see it? It wasnÔøΩt a ninja lizard. Or invisible. ItÔøΩs in the ventilation ducts, just like in Aliens. ThereÔøΩs a pipe on the wall over out balcony, this leads into the rooms ventilation and by day the lizards can come in if it gets too hot or rains. By night they come in as it is warmer and we have the light on, they can watch TV, eat Pringles or whatever lizards like to do. ItÔøΩs a new species of dark fearing pipe dwelling lizard; I get the feeling its in an evolutionary dead end.

Tomorrow is the last full day of the Italian adventure and IÔøΩll be very glad to get back. Italy is a surreal place full of contradictions. ThatÔøΩs not to say that England doesnÔøΩt have as many faults and quirks ÔøΩ it does. But I know them all, and they are somehow more comfortable for there familiarity. Although England is nasty, brutish and degenerate I can cope with the old dog. At least until I move to Canada, if theyÔøΩll let me that is.

* A pack of small roped dogs that pulls you up a steep hill. Or a train. You decide.
