How to Promote Your Blog for Free

October 19th, 2004 · 2 Comments

Or how to do a deal with Satan and survive

This is something I never thought I would do, promote CreationRobot to the world. The sites been up for a year and has a pretty large hit rate/readership just through Google’s spider indexing the pages. I rarely read other peoples blogs, or participate in the blog community so this site isn’t blog interconnected in that way.

So pact with the devil made, chicken blood spilt and my soul well and truly sold to the evil of advertising, what next. Why, Google of course. I researched how to promote your blog to the world at large, reading up on other peoples advise and experiences.

Some of this promotion is easy, like the listings, RSS feeds and pings, and some of it is much harder but worth more, like community participation. The latter will have to wait until I get more time, I’m writing this while bouncing my baby daughter on my foot, so this is a guide to the former. Want to promote your weblog? Come with me, said the spider to the fly, and follow these three basic steps …

Step One, Listomatic. Get your Blog Listed:
Add your blogs details to the following list sites -
http://portal.eatonweb.com
http://www.globeofblogs.com.
http://www.popdex.com
http://www.bloguniverse.com/radlinks/?id_category=2&act=add_new
http://www.blogwise.com
http://blogdex.net/
http://www.blogpulse.com
www.blogchalking.tk/ was an option too, but I didn’t like the idea of it so I avoided it.

CreationRobot is well indexed by google too. Make sure you are in Google, really, really.

Step Two, Ping Pong. For Pings I’m using:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com/
This pings the following sites automatically, so you do not need to add any of these if you are using the ping0matic address -
Weblogs.com
rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2
Technorati
rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
Blo.gs
ping.blo.gs/
Blogrolling
rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/
Blogbot (Danish)
blogbot.dk/io/xml-rpc.php
Yahoo
api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2
Rootblog
ping.rootblog.com/rpc.php
Weblogs.se (Swedish)
ping.weblogs.se/
Bitacoras.net (Spanish)
bitacoras.net/ping/
Weblogues.com (French)
www.weblogues.com/RPC/
Blogg.de (German)
xmlrpc.blogg.de/
PubSub.com
xping.pubsub.com/ping/

As well as:
These are not included by pingomatic, ao add these in as well -
ping.rootblog.com/rpc.php
www.mod-pubsub.org/kn_apps/blogchatter/ping.php
bulkfeeds.net/rpc
xping.pubsub.com/ping/
ping.bloggers.jp/rpc/ (Japanese)

That’s a total of 6 pings going out to 20 sites when a new post is added, nice and bandwidth friendly.

Step Three, Feed Me Seymor. For RSS I’m using:

http://feedster.com/index.php
http://feeds.scripting.com
http://www.bloglines.com
http://www.moreover.com This is an odd one to get into … pending. Probably not worth bothering with.
http://www.syndic8.com
http://www.newsisfree.com/contact.php
http://www.genecast.com/news/create.jsp
http://www.2rss.com/index.php
http://www.memigo.com/feed
http://www.pubsub.com/add-feed
http://www.anse.de/rdfticker/addchannel.php Think this one failed to add, pending. Probably not worth bothering with.

Your Blurb:
This is can be different to your tagline, at least it is in my case. This sites tagline is Forced Autonomous Creativity, wrap your head round that if you can. The blurb is a promotional line that should entice people in, so promoting this site means I’ve had to come up with a catchy blurb. As usual I spent little to no time and this and came up with ‘Blogging from the English coast, on life love and, well, whatever hits the fan.’ Forgive me dearest reader, forgive me.

I know advertising is evil, I’m sorry. I’ve not promoted this site at all during its one year of existance though, so perhaps a little evil is needed.

Also considering Adsense, googles’ text advertising for the site, see if I can pay for the hosting costs through that. More later …

Shame I don’t have a Evil catagory, this post would fall right into it; tempted to create it.

Nod and a wink to the following sites that I found helpful, trackbacks added where applicable:
