Sam and Max team forms new studio - PC News at GameSpot
The staff at Lucasarts behind Sam and Max - and other classics like Grim Fandango - have left Lucasarts and formed there own games studio: Telltale Games. This follows Lucasarts’ drubbing following the March 2003 canning of the much anticipated Sam and Max 2.
At the time they were working on the game Lucasarts stated: “Sam & Max Hit the Road is a classic and [is] as close to being a signature game as any LucasArts has ever done,” - Lucasarts president Simon Jeffery.
Only to then announce “After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we’ve decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC” said Mike Nelson, acting general manager and VP of finance.
Sam and Max 2 was cancelled by a bean counter that saw the Star Wars churn mill as the best way to make money. Zero time and effort required; as people buy Star Wars games anyway.
Here’s hoping that TellTale games gets the rights to a new Sam and Max game - the rumour mill says not only do they have the rights but they have already started coding …
