Flickr is so slow! I want to display images on a group site, so not hosted locally, and have the display to be prompt.
OK if you are not paying then you get what you are paying for. So I’m looking for two things right now:
- Alternatives to Flickr
- Alternate way to display Flickr images within WordPress
The above piccy (since removed) has been added using the Flickr Insert Plugin from blog.stuffedguys.com. It’s a really nice plugin for putting spot images into a specific post, and importantly caches the thumbnails locally for speed. Easy to install too. It doesn’t quite do what I want though, a selection of random images from my flickr account.
I’ll edit this further when I come up with more solutions later today. Note: I’ve not fully looked into how to integrate these with WordPress yet.
www.heypix.com/ - Looks good, a lack of detail on the site about upload limits and a Windows only client stop me using it though. They say a web based client and OSX client are coming in a few weeks, but they said that mid-December.
www.pbase.com/ - Looks rubbish, costs, the trail offered is lousy. Just not my thang.
www.fotki.com/ - Looks OK, but less storage than Flickr.
photobucket.com/ - This seems to be the best competition to Flickr right now. The only drawback that I can see if the bandwidth limit of 1500MB a month, but that is pretty high for just picture serving from a blog.
flickr.com/ - Flickr rules the roost when it comes to photo community sites, this is why flickr is damned slow at times and why they were bought out. The main drawbacks with Flickr are the 100 photo limit and the time is takes to access images.

You don’t think that Yahoo! buying flickr won’t help speed up flickr any?

It is one possibility. Another is Flickr will go pay only. Or Yahoo will rebrand it and wreck the interface. Who knows.
It is up to Yahoo, and I have yet to see anything good come from Yahoo. The messenger is flawed, the search engine is rubbish. So I’m not holding my breath hoping Yahoo will improve Flickr.

Well, I’m going to give Yahoo! a little credit. Yahoo! 360 looks interesting.
I would find it really surprising if Yahoo! went pay only on flickr. It’s the most popular picture site out there. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did. They can make a ton more money from advertising.
I guess we’ll see…

Check out Google’s Picasa web albums. They allow 1GB for a free account.
