Zeldman has declared tag clouds as
uncool as the mullet.
What does this mean exactly? It means I had to bother to get one.
So after a search for the easiest to impliment version, taa-daa, on the left you see my tag cloud, with the ‘blog’ tag excluded as that is on every one of my posts.
Why then, if they have been decreed as passe, do I get one now. Because. Why should one person declare something as uncool and the lemmings follow along repeating the mantra -irony acknowledged- or even remove their own tag clouds. This lemming blog mentality is frightening, and it’s not Zeldman’s fault.
It’s like slashdot clone mind-think, every online ‘community’ gets this way, to a greater or lesser degree. That’s humanity. Are blogs are community? Certainly some are. There’s a core of blogs that have enough influence to effect the lemmings and the mullet quote spreads through those like a new meme.
I settled on engadget.com’s ‘heat-map’ plugin. Unlike the plugin from hitormiss.org and frenchfragfactory.net the engadget one worked. Thanks go to Christoph Wimmer.
The code to add to you page isn’t included on engadget though - you can see mine here. I had the initial solution from optional-n.com. It will help some people figure things out I’m sure.
