Windows fan site winsupersite.com has reported that the current release of Longhorn is “a train wreck.†Pretty negative from one the largest Microsoft fanboys there is.
I can understand the level of disappointment that Longhorn is generating but people should recall that this OS isn’t out until mid 2006. I know it is Microsoft, and it will have major problems, but it will be a lot more polished before release. This is a post alpha, pre beta display of Longhorn. A true beta will be out late summer 2005, it is this one should reflect the finished product far more.
The Windows world is pinning everything on Longhorn, it has become a Microsoft make or break totem. They’ve stripped Longhorn’s advanced features to try and get the OS out in 2006, Palladium (yay), the DB filesystem WinFS (boo) – an instant OS wide search feature already running Apple Tiger called Spotlight. It is estimated to be 2009 before WinFS arrives for servers. Is everyone going to wait and use Windows 2003 Server for the next four years? Unlikely, my guess is Microsoft will drop features from the server version of Longhorn and get a stripped down version out of the door. (Not that I’ve looked that up as yet).
Microsoft is wrong footed and Apple is on the rise. The post XP OS has really gone wrong; they just can’t get it out of the door. Apple’s not been in this strong a position for a very long time and will gain more sales and greater market and mind share the longer Longhorn stays locked up.
iPod Sir? Would you like a mini Mac with that?
Even Gartner say stay away from Longhorn.
Don’t get me wrong though, Microsoft may be a sick Rhino but it will still stomp the hell out of OS X on release in terms of both sales and the numbers in use. UNIX eh? Stomp. Secure eh? Stomp.
It’s not the end of Microsoft, but just how sick is that Rhino. Will Longhorn become just NT 5.3?
