.Mac for free

TNPI – Homemade (Do It Yourself) .mac using mod_dav and Apache

My .Mac account runs out today, yes I’ve been on OS X now for over a year.

I haven’t renewed as it just isn’t worth the money for me, .Mac is 68 GBP, Tiger will be released in two to three weeks for 99 GBP. I’d rather have the new OS for that level of price difference.

You can read about .Mac here. I’ve found it handy for uploading image galleries – if limited.

Mail - I use the email address, but not webmail.
Address Book – I don’t use this and have no desire to have my contacts online where someone could get to them.
Bookmarks - See above.
Homepage - I’ve used this most, but just for throwing up very quick galleries of images.
iDisk - File transfer, but I haven’t used it much due to the 250MB limit.
iCards - Useless.
Backup - See iDisk.
iSync - If only more apps used this, then it might be handy.
Virex - Antivirus for OSX when OSX has ZERO virus in the wild. So what’s the point.
iCal - See Address Book.

Other benifits include some guides, chapters from books, money off shareware and the odd free program.

For me .Mac is just not worth the expense. However the DIY .Mac just might be useful, throw away those file limits and other restrictions and you have something worthwhile. I’ll definatly try this one out.
