Linspire, the easier to use desktop version of Linux (debatable) is currently available for free. They normally charge for this build of Linux.

Lots of versions of Linux are available for free, Debian and so on, this one is targeted at the basic desktop user. Linux for non-geeks, if you will.

It is a goal that it only sort of succeeds at, but it is worth trying before you boot back into slackware :P (OK, Windows or OSX in reality, it my statistics are to be believed.)
