Geek Motivators?

June 29th, 2005 · No Comments

I have the approximate motivation of a sloth. A sloth with no ambition, drive or goals. A bum sloth. A dead sloth.

You get the idea. I’m not a driven, motivated, person. However I have some goals, a few projects that I want to see through to completion, my first novel for one – and to do this I want to motivate myself.
So how does one go about creating motivation in a sloth? Class A drugs are right out. Imagine a sloth on speed? Not a good notion. A system of self rewards and penalties?

I have no idea, I’m a dead sloth. I’ve a very long commute to my job in a three letter IT firm, up at 6am, back at 6pm. I’ve a baby and an equally harassed and tired wife with an even more gruelling commute to her job – we’re both damn tired a lot of the time. So my scope and time is limited.

My aim is to create sloth motivation – how do you motivate yourself when, traditionally at least, you’re not a motivated individual. The geek approach is to read up, educate yourself, then tackle each bit. Aside from hiring a motivation trainer, which due to the lack of spare cash I can’t do, this seems to me as the only way.
So what motivates you? Have you read, or listened to an audio book, about anything that worked, that motivated you? I’ll Google for solutions later, I wonder if this is worth an Ask Slashdot.

Note that this doesn’t apply to my working life, just home projects. The amount of time and energy expended in work is one reason home projects are harder.
