I haven’t found a use for automator yet, it’s arcane UI and general unrelieability have stopped me from using it. What I want is a download sort script. When I download something to a specific directory a cron is running on that directory, automator then sorts pics, music, movies into the appropriate directories.
Right now though automator is pretty useless; this is reflected by the number of downloads available on the Apple website. 85 Automator scripts available, compare this to the number of Widgets, over 500 and growing.
Apple needs to enhance Automator and quickly.

I think it’s a bit disingenuous to judge Automator’s usefulness using available downloads compared to Dashboard as a metric. Dashboard widgets are designed to be shared, and are, to some degree “use-once-and-trash” fluff. Automator is geared to users seeking solutions to workflow needs, and as such tend to fit specific needs that don’t necessarily merit the “sharing” paradigm.
That said, I agree that Automator needs improvement, but even at 1.0 status it works quite well overall as far as its capabilities go.

DUDE! That’s so easy with automator.

It’s not creating it, it’s was getting it to run. Automator just didn’t work right.
For a version of the script in question, that works, see http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060130010025791
