I’ve not tried to get XGL running on my Unbuntu install, which was updated to Dapper F5 as of yesterday. Linux XGL brings the GUI up to the level OS X established back in 2000, the GUI is drawn via GPU processing, not the CPU. Windows is still some way off achieving this.
So why haven’t I tried XGL before? Well getting XGL to play nice with my Radeon 9500 pro is more hassle than I can be bothered with. My days of spending ages playing with configs and reading howto’s are past me, I no longer have the spare time to spend on it.
I was pleased to see this Live CD, a term that means you can boot from the CD and try the OS without changing anything on you hard disk. At last, I though with a glimmer of playful anticipation, I can try out XGL. Though of course I have to download it first …
A torrent is here.

If you would like to find out what it’s all about, then download the CD and boot up your PC! The Live CD comes with X.Org 7.0, GNOME 2.12.2, 3D support and of course Xgl. Supported drivers are ‘nvidia’ (NVIDIA) and ‘fglrx’ (ATI). Minimum recommended configuration is Pentium 3 with NVIDIA GeForce video card.”" So, of course we downloaded it and checked it out.
