HDR Photography HowTo and Link Roundup

April 16th, 2006 · 8 Comments

After reading about HDR, I decided to do a bit more research into HDR photography before I try it out.

I’m going to be expanding this as I go along so check back for updates.

So here are a few basics:

You need a Digital SLR that you can manually set exposure on, mine’s a Canon EOS 300D. A guide to the 300D can be found here. You can do this with SLRs but why bother, just get a DSLR.

You need a tripod as the camera has to stay still between shots.

You need a remote for your camera. All the tutorials and guides say this is a must because ‘Pressing the shutter button will move the camera!’ Well hang on bucko, what about setting the exposures? Non of the remotes allow you to change the exposure setting so you have to touch the camera anyway. Either all these sites are taking information from each other or I’m missing something here. Can the 300D do auto-bracketing? I need to look that up, if it can then that’s the bit I’m missing. The answer is yes it can, page 76 of the user manual, reproduced below. The 300D will take three shots automatically at norm, high and low exposures.

Your subject needs to be static. If you are taking shots of something moving it’ll be in a different position for each shot. Not a problem if that is what you are aiming at, for example a water scene.

You need to take at least 3 shots, ideally 5. To take five shots: Take a reference image, then one exposure down, then another exposure down. Then up the exposure to +1, then +2. That’s five images, nice range of light that should produce a good HDR.

The images then need to be combined and, not surprisingly, the king of this is Photoshop CS2. It has a HDR function with lots of tweaking options available. More on how to do this here. Another useful site is here, those are about the best two around on HDR photography.

How have I fared at this? I’ll let you know when I’ve had a chance to try it.
