Livejournal Bans Ad-Blocking Software - Updated

April 20th, 2006 · No Comments

I’ve tried Livejournal, way back in the mists of early blogging. I didn’t like it so I moved on, I found it too insular and restricting. I read on /. this morning that LJ is now terminating user accounts if that user account runs advert-blocking software on there browser/router/firewall.

How can they know? Also, why are you still using LJ? Actually the whole thing isn’t as bad as it sounds, have a look at: community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/236361.html

CR runs adverts, as does CoffeeCritters, one of my other sites . The only reason I do this is to pay toward my hosting costs, which adverts do not fully meet by any means; I’m lucky if I make 30 cents a day. Even so, I don’t care if you block adverts on my sites. hey, go to it.

I use Camino, it blocks them by default.

If LJ cannot afford to host free accounts funded by adverts then drop them. Don’t do something stupid like trying to ban advert-blockers and make yourself look like an ass to the community you want to attract.

Also covered now on Valleywag with some nice quotes from SixApart:

April 2004:

It may be because it’s one of our biggest pet peeves, or it may be because they don’t garner a lot of money, but nonetheless, we promise to never offer advertising space in our service or on our pages.

February 2005:

We operate the LiveJournal service with the following goals:
Avoid banner advertisements
As it’s one of our larger pet peeves, we have avoided putting banner advertisements on the site. Although our Terms of Service permits us to change our policy in the future, we’ve found throughout the past few years that our “paid accounts” business model has, so far, made banners ads unnecessary.
