Voyager 1, launched in 1977, keeps on trucking

April 4th, 2006 · No Comments

A group of amateur (non-government) atronomers have picked up a signal from Voyager 1.

The quality of the engineering on Voyager 1 must have been astounding, hard to believe it’s still functioning.

The NASA image above shows just how far Voyager 1 and 2 have reached – yes the yellow dot is the sun.

The distance was 14.7 billion km.

This distance equals approximately 98 times the distance between Earth and Sun. VOYAGER 1 is the most distant object ever built by mankind.

VOYAGER 1 was launched on 5. September 1977 by NASA. It transmitted the first close-up pictures of Jupiter and Saturn. In 2004 VOYAGER 1 passed the Termination Shock Region, where the solar wind mixes with interstellar gas. VOYAGER 1 today is still active, measuring the interstellar magnetic field.
