Finding the time to excersize - Walk a Quarter-Mile or Die

May 4th, 2006 · No Comments

This report on LifeScience is overly simplistic but it does point out the simply fact that if you don’t excersize you are unhealthy and you will die sooner. Geez. Walk up call. I really need to excersize more.

And by more I mean at all. I haven’t done much excersize at all over the last ten years - before that I played squash, did bikeriding, karate and swam regularly. I was pretty fit. Since then, nothing.

Somethings got to change, I’m approaching my mid thirties and doing no excercize, that cannot be good. I need to look at fitting in some excersize on a daily/weekly basis. I didn’t get around to doing the Time mapping from yesterday, but I really must. I think I’ll try and get to it later today at work.

If you can walk a quarter-mile, odds are you have at least six years of life left in you, scientists announced today.

And the faster you can do it, the longer you might live.

While walking is no guarantee of health or longevity, a new study found that the ability of elderly people to do the quarter-mile was an “important determinant” in whether they’d be alive six years later and how much illness and disability they would endure.

“The ability to complete this walk was a powerful predictor of health outcomes,” said study leader Anne Newman of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “In fact, we found that the people who could not complete the walk were at an extremely high risk of later disability and death.”
