The site may be an awful flash design that needs to be retired but the pictures are pretty amazing. It’s another abandoned Russian city post, I’m getting quite a collection of these now, this one has a twist though. It’s the city of Pripjat which was abandoned 20 yeras ago just after the explosion at Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The city may be abondoned but a group of artists are returning to it and painting street art.
For two days in October, 2005, a group of twentysomething Belarusians and Germans took a trip to Pripyat, ostensibly to take photographs. Since Chernobylinterinform was understaffed that day, the group was accompanied by an inexperienced zone worker. When it was time for lunch, the visitors said they weren’t hungry but told their escort that she could go back to the town of Chornobyl to eat. Leaving them unaccompanied violated zone rules. But even the regular guides couldn’t have predicted what the group was planning.
See the figures above, and the flower below.
Looking at the photos nature is slowly reclaiming the city, I’m not sure these guys are adding to the city but whatever, I don’t think they are making it worse either. A debate thread exists here in which some people are calling this defacing a grave. It’s all going to be bulldozed one day, graves change too – it’s all a matter of time.
Many more photos can be seen here.
