Now get rid of advertising in schools, unhealthy sponsors and fatty snacks. If you are going to police food and drink in schools either do it the whole way or don’t bother. Tinkering at the edges is not going to achieve much.
The Yahoo! headline is utterly wrong. Cans (Sodas) will still be sold in schools but they will all be diet drinks. A strong argument exists that these are far worse for you than the sugar laden versions, diet drinks contain some really nasty chemicals like aspartame and phenalanalyne. Cancer linked and anti-depressents that are possibly addictive and other odd effects on the body. Oh just great.
Out of the frying pan …
Not that I’m preaching here, I’m a diet coke addict - at least 2 cans a day.

Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and the American Beverage Association have all signed onto the deal, Carson said, adding that the companies serve “the vast majority of schools.” The American Beverage Association represents the majority of school vending bottlers.

Greetings from another diet coke addict!
I read about this too - while I think it’s responsible of these corporations to react to concerns and issues, I don’t think that pulling regular soda from schools is going to tackle the obesity issue in America! We need all hands on deck with emphasis being put on physical fitness in schools and healthy diets.
On the aspartame subject, I believe the study that links it to cancer to is the Ramazzini study - however, I read that that study has not been accepted by MedLine, and that the FDA has done hundreds of studies on it and deemed it safe. ?
