UK PlayStation 3 comes in at 425 GBP

I dislike Joystiq, it’s bias and its coverage of E3 sucked. Kotoku was way better, its coverage was excellent.

That said, here’s a piece on the super expensive Playstation 3. Filled with ‘over the pond’ American humour. How amusing. Excuse me while I remove Joystiq from my ‘daily sites’ folder.

425 Sony? You really think this is going to sell? Are you crazy? This is a boost for the 360 and the Wii.

Sony has officially announced the U.K. price of the Playstation 3 as £425, representing the fully featured PS3 which comes in at $599 in the U.S. and 599 EUR in Europe. GamesIndustry.biz suggests that Sony won’t be selling the cut down model over the pond, although this isn’t confirmed. The PS3’s price in England is higher than the console’s price in the United States and Europe but we’re not entirely surprised by this: British consumers are used to paying more for their consoles (although traditionally the U.K. gets identical or lower prices compared to Europe). Here’s a breakdown of the U.K. premium over U.S. and EU prices:

* £109 more than the U.S. “Premium” PS3: the U.S. price is $599 which converts to £316. Take this away from £425 and you’re left with a £109 premium.
* £20 more than the EU “Premium” PS3: the EU price is 599 EUR which converts to £405. Take this away from £425 and you’re left with a £20 premium

Now check out the price when compared to the Xbox 360:

* £146 more than Xbox 360 Premium: the Xbox 360 Premium is £279. Take away this figure from the PS3’s £425 price and you’re left with a £146 premium.
* £206 more than Xbox 360 Core: the Xbox 360 Core is £219. Take away this figure from the PS3’s £425 price and you’re left with a £206 premium.

No, I haven’t. I lived in London for three years as I went to University there.

You’ll have to be more specific regarding bias. Many of my posts you could consider to be biased towards one point of view, but that’s only because I write as a gamer, not a journalist. I don’t pretend to be objective – if I see a company doing something I disagree with (whether it’s Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft) I’ll call them on it, as will the other bloggers at Joystiq. However, if you mean biased towards one company, then you’re dead wrong. Over the past 6 months we’ve highlighted problems with the Xbox 360 (do a google for our annoyances and delights posts), complained about the PS3’s outrageous price and stated our confusion over Nintendo naming its console “Wii”. Please tell me where this perceived bias stems from.

As for whether Joystiq’s coverage of E3 was better/worse than Kotaku’s – that’s a matter of opinion. Personally (I was one of only two members of the Joystiq team that didn’t attend E3 – I was sitting an exam! UGH.) I enjoyed Joystiq’s coverage far more than Kotaku’s (although you’ll accept an element of bias ;) but if you prefer Kotaku over Joystiq, then that’s your prerogative!

Cor blimey, guvnor! You must be avin a larf, int ya? I take it you’ve never been exposed to cockney slang?!

    Hey Conrad, welcome to CR.

You didn’t pick me up on the percieved Joystiq bias or argue over Kotoku’s way better E3 coverage? Well, OK.

Over the pond is used by both sides IIRC, not just the English. However I’m sure someone can Google for it, but I won’t bother.

    Cor Blimey Guv’nor?

Hi, Conrad here, the writer of the Joystiq article you linked to.

I believe “over the pond” is actually an English phrase used for describing Americans, I just turned it around. FYI – I live in Kent, UK.
