Slate has, yet again, got some great photos up on its today’s pictures section. They are all around the theme of summer, which hits us today as it’s Solstice and official summer time.
I flicked through the pictures until I hit the Blackpool picture, 1981 style on Blackpool beach. It’s pretty close to where I’m currently living (an hours drive away) so I sipped my coffee and paused to look at the picture. Then I spotted the dog in the background and laughed at just how quintessentially English the scene is. Than stopped as everyone in the office turned to me and I mopped coffee up with a rueful grin.

I’m reading Bill Bryson’s ‘Notes from a Small Island’ right now and it’s making me feel somewhat surreal about my surroundings. I’m half Canadian now, I’ve the visa stamp to prove it but I’ve never lived outside England. Yet I already look at England through a slightly outside perspective. As though I was no longer quite part of it. Mental preparation for the eventual move?
Or perhaps encroaching insanity, who can tell.
