Turn internal IDE or SATA hard disks into external ones

June 23rd, 2006 · 2 Comments

These small cables are so cool, buy huge inexpensive SATA (or IDE, but why bother) drives and use just use these cables as connectors. It turns and internal hard disks into external ones. Very handy for a backup hot drive.

… compatible with Microsoft Windows ME/2000/XP and Mac OS X 10.1.3. The adapter connects to 3.5/2.5 inch hard drives and allows one to connect those drives via USB 2.0 to a computer.

Wouldnt it make more sense to just buy an enclosure?
Internal hard disk + enclosure = external HDD - and since these wires all seem to end up as USB2.0 anyway it wont make a difference.

The great thing about the wire is its much easier to swap between different disks than taking apart an enclosure each time, but the enclosure also serves to keep the HDD cool [aluminum enclosures or fan-assisted plastic ones]

The price might make a difference though - i guess if the wires end up much cheaper than a full enclosure they might be worth it - but arent there already some SATA/eSATA connectors out there that would do the same thing at 6x the speed?

Hey ViCtory, these are the first cables I\’ve seen that allow you to buy cheap external SATA disks, then some cables and whack the disk to a laptop. If the cables are cheap enough this is good, if the cables are expensive then buy a decent external enclosure - which is what I did. Twice. For sheer ease of getting any internal disk to act as an external (repairs, emergency, warm backup OS) then this can\’t be beaten.
