A long time ago I bought the Library from Delicious Monster and a hand held barcode scanner. Library is a super app that owns other libarary programs hands down in looks. I’m not sure if it does when it comes to usability though, I’m testing Books again; a freeware application that’s coming on nicely. Or I would be testing it but Books Delicious import hangs and nothing happens. Sigh.

Why hasn’t Delicious updated Library in ages?

So I added my stuff to Library and had about 500 books, plus DVDs and games. When I was half way through adding everything I decided that to add of of these books again would be a pain, so I did a backup. I’d done 350 books at that time, over half my bookshelves.

Then I didn’t do another backup - this was before I started to do monthly backups. When I rebuilt my PowerBook I forgot about the Delicious Library and *poof* the whole thing vanished. I’ve 350 books from that old backup, but without going through my bookshelves and comparing books to the Library list I’ve no way of knowing what I’ve already scanned.

Which means I need to do each book again in turn. Craptacular. Half a backup in this case is as bad as no backup at all.

If you want a library application on OS X try out Books first, if you are feeling flush then splash for Delicious Library as it’s worth it. Use eBay for a cheap barcode scanner as it makes adding books 5000 times faster.
