Apple Airport Extreme

March 4th, 2007 · No Comments

I just recieved my Apple Airport Extreme router, I’d do a full review but I’m not really in a position to as my old PowerBook cannot do 802.11n. So this is a review of all the features not including the uber speed of the n specification.

The current generation WiFi routers are 54 Mbit, the g specification. The newer, not yet finalised, n specification is way faster:

802.11n
Release Date Op. Frequency Data Rate (Typ) Data Rate (Max)
Unfinished 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz 200 Mbit/s 540 Mbit/s
Range (Indoor)
~50 meters (~165 ft)

So far I love it, the range is superb, the wi-fi disk access is trouble free. My only complaint is how hidden the admin is, this box is troublesome to admin. Easy to setup, it was plug and play.

When you do find the admin interface you are not overwhelmed by options but it is servicable. I can’t wait until I get the next generation of MacBook Pro machines, the wifi will be wonderfully speedy then.
